Roadside bomb detonated as a school van was passing by it in the Nisti Kot area.

An 11-year-old boy died in a bomb attack on a school bus in Upper Kurram, which also killed the driver, officials said on Tuesday.

The bombing took place in the Nisti Kot area of the Upper Kurram tribal district, which is rife with insurgents and is also gripped by sectarian violence between Shia and Sunni Muslims. “An 11-year-old boy and the driver of the school van were killed when a bomb planted on a roadside exploded,” said local government official Shahid Ali. A seven-year-old girl was also wounded, he said, adding that no group had come forward to immediately claim responsibility for the attack. An intelligence official also confirmed the bombing and casualties.

Security forces cordoned off the area and a search operation has been started in the area. “All three, the driver, the deceased student and the injured student were of the same family,” said an eyewitness, adding that the van was completely destroyed. “We received the schoolgirl in serious condition,” said Dr. Sabir Hussain.

In a separate incident on Nov. 17, a hand grenade detonated in a classroom in Bannu, injuring three students. According to police, one of the students had brought the grenade to class. They said investigations were currently ongoing.
