Islamabad, Sept. 23

Did the Election Commission of Pakistan just bolster the case against last year’s general elections? It recently posted a 175-page document, “Post Election Review Report 2013,” on its website that appears to support claims of rigging to varying degrees. Not so, the commission says in its Sept. 23 press release, “Time to Switch from Witch-hunting Mode to Truthful Analysis and Concrete Electoral Reforms,” as the document is merely a faithful compilation of observations from election officers, observers and voters. The commission demands critics refrain from “creating a furor on a daily basis to mislead and confuse the nation” about polls “which have been hailed by the whole world and have raised the image of Pakistan internationally.” It concludes “on the thought that perfection is not possible in this imperfect world, that we all should strive towards achievement of this noble ideal while being fully aware of our own imperfections rather than adopting a holier-than-thou attitude and raising a finger at the frailties of all others.” That’s not much of a concession speech.
