Police say they don’t know why the family was targeted.

At least seven people, including three women and two children, were killed in the Bakar Banda area of Hangu district early on Wednesday morning, according to local police.

“Armed men opened indiscriminate fire on the family, killing seven of them on the spot and leaving one injured,” said a local police official on condition of anonymity. He said the incident had occurred around 2:00 a.m. and three to four unidentified gunmen had barged into the house. The family originally belonged to Orakzai Agency, but had been living in Hangu due to militancy in South Waziristan.

“One girl survived because she was in the bathroom [at the time of the attack],” the police official said, adding that police had started investigating the case.

“At the moment, we don’t know why this family was targeted,” he said.

The injured and deceased have been shifted to a nearby hospital.
