Tariq Rana is accused of killing Gulam Aasia in Lahore last year.

A British man was charged Friday with killing a woman in Pakistan under an 1861 law that allows for British nationals to be tried for murder committed abroad, police said.

Tariq Rana, 30, is accused of killing Gulam Aasia, 49, in Lahore on July 27, 2013. She died after being shot several times outside her home. “Although the murder took place in Pakistan, Section 9 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 provides authority to try a U.K. national for an offence of murder committed overseas,” London’s Scotland Yard police force said in a statement.

Rana, who has no permanent address, was arrested on Wednesday. Two other British nationals, Nargis Ahmed, 33, and Mohammed Adeel, 35, both from Birmingham in central England, have been charged with assisting an offender. All three were due to appear at Hendon Magistrates Court in north London on Friday.
