At least two killed, 10 others injured in suicide attack outside the consulate building.

A suicide bomb attack outside the Iranian consulate in Peshawar on Monday killed two paramilitary soldiers and wounded 10 others, officials said.

The bombing took place in the upmarket University Town area of the northwestern city, where many non-government organizations are also based.

“We have two bodies of paramilitary soldiers and 10 wounded have been admitted to hospital,” said Farhad Khan, a spokesman for Khyber Teaching Hospital where the casualties were taken. A senior police official, Mohammad Ejaz Ahmed, said it appeared to be a suicide bombing. He said other paramilitary soldiers in the area fired in the air in panic after the bombing.

“A suicide bomber blew himself up near the Iranian consulate after security forces ordered him to stop,” said Nasir Khan Durrani, inspector general of Peshawar police. “The target may have been either the Iranian consulate or another nearby office.”

Durrani added: “We are in a state of war and the whole of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is under threat. Peshawar is the most sensitive part of the province.”

“It was a suicide blast,” confirmed Bomb Disposal Squad chief Shafqat Malik. “Five kilograms of explosive material was used in the attack and the attacker was on foot at the time he detonated himself.”

No group has yet claimed responsibility, but the Pakistani Taliban have carried out such attacks in the past.
