In purported suicide note, defense analyst says he is taking his own life to ‘avoid humiliation’ at hands of NAB

Defense analyst Asad Munir, a retired brigadier of the Pakistan Army, has committed suicide, police claimed on Friday, after his body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his home in Islamabad.

While reports of Munir’s death became public early Friday, journalist Umar Cheema confirmed the nature of the death. Posting on Twitter, Cheema released Munir’s suicide note, which has been addressed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

In the note, dated March 15, 2019, Munir cites an investigation launched against him by the National Accountability Bureau over his time as the Member Estate of the Capital Development Authority. “I am committing suicide to avoid humiliation, being handcuffed and paraded in front of media,” the note shared by Cheema states. “I request you, the honorable Chief Justice, to take notice of NAB’s officials [sic] conduct so that other government officials are not convicted for the crimes they had not committed.”

On Thursday, media reports had claimed that NAB, during an executive board meeting, had granted approval for the filing of a fresh reference against Munir. According to the reports, Munir was accused of misusing his authority and restoring a plot in F-11 area of the federal capital in violation of rules and regulations. In his suicide note, Munir maintains that it was the CDA chairman, and not he, who had restored the plot.

Munir also condemns the behavior of NAB personnel in his letter. “With one exception all other investigating officers in my cases, were incompetent, rude, arrogant, untrained; knew little about the working of the department they were investigating, they had already assumed that I have been involved in corrupt practices without listening to me.”

The former Army official urges the Chief Justice to bring about “positive” changes to the system to stop “incompetent people” from dishonoring Pakistani citizens “in the name of accountability.” He also urges the Chief Justice to examine his case record, saying “if you think that I have been involved in corrupt practices then the case is closed and if NAB has been wrong then I would like you to clear my name.”

His funeral will be held in Islamabad at 5:00 p.m. today.
